Who’s Next

Won’t Get Fooled Again!

_____________

It was a long time ago, and I can’t say what I was doing when I first heard a cut off of The Who’s  new album, “Who’s Next”, entitled “Won’t Get Fooled Again”.

The song was electrifying, especially if one had been smoking some good weed.  I have probably listened to this song more than a hundred times since that first time I heard it, as it seems to resonate with some of my moods at times. In playing it on YouTube just now it dawns on me that there is a correlation between the consciousness of the anti-War underground sub-culture back in the Acid days of the 1960s and 1970s and the anti-War movement today within the general Constitutionalist movement.

Yet here is an oddity which I’d like to note while introducing readers to this song.  Back during the Viet Nam war this nation was wracked with dynamic emotions as a large part of the public was strongly opposed to the U.S. presence in Viet Nam, while the Christian Right was totally supportive of that insane, illegal, and immoral war.

The government was hell-bent on pitching a hot-and-nasty little war “over there”, so we, in theory, would not have to fight communism “over here”.  That, as 20th Century history now shows quite clearly, was a bold-faced lie. Yes, the Federal government lied through its teeth in order to grant Wall Street, the arms industry, and the Pentagon a money-making sin-fest at the public’s expense and also at the expense of the U.S. Constitution, which requires a Congressional vote before fielding the American armed forces into another sovereign nation-state.

Yet when all the “little people” out there across America rose up in protest, the government sent forth its arrays of enforcement and power, all in the name of “Authority”.  Government force trotted out squads of police and National Guard troops, and in some instances even put military tanks onto city streets.  It was all wrong. It was a centralized government’s bull-headed determination to have their little war no matter what the American public, or the rest of the world for that matter, thought about the idea.

During that same period of time the CIA was quite busy spreading around the nation lots and lots of LSD, and the LSD was absorbed by the underground anti-war counter-culture, who used the drug to extend or “expand” their consciousness and discover mental planes of understanding which only reinforced their notions that mankind should not be making war. They called it “Tripping” or “Getting High”, and the straight world, comprised of the Sheeple who swallowed the government’s lie about Viet Nam, encouraged the police to crack down on the peaceful “hippy culture”. We hippies who came together and chanted “Give Peace A Chance!” were punished by the enforcement arms of the government, whose thugs happily smashed our heads, kicked us, spat on us, and worse, (as history shows).

Yep. The self-righteous brainwashed Sheeple in their vigorous gullibility were screaming “My country right or wrong!” or “America – Love it or leave it!“, etc. They were waving little American flags and chanting the old “support our troops” mantra all through the nation. And the mass media played its part in that while the nation’s pulpits encouraged it as well.

Looking back on those days, I find it strikingly odd that “God” would have had his church people embrace an illegal invasion of a far-away land which could only threaten America by sailing sampans across the mighty Pacific Ocean.  For the millennials here who may not know what a sampan is, I’ve this old photo from my time at war,  The little wooden boats behind your humble servant and my little friends are called “sampans”.

Would you, as a Viet Cong peasant half a century ago, have ever considered paddling one of these things across the Pacific to attack the most powerful nation on earth?  Neither would the Vietnamese people — yet, in the name of Defense, we went over there and decimated their lands, their society, their culture, and killed more than two million of them in a ten-year sin-fest of bombing and mass-murder. Looking back on that today, from our more enlightened perspective, would you think that “God” would have told his churches in America to support that?  Personally, I think that government-sponsored propaganda, channeled through the mass media, is what told the church people to support that war and hate those peaceful hippies who opposed that war. How sad, that even though we now know the bitter truth about our government’s propensity to lie to us, middle-class Americans blindly believe this insane government’s propaganda about the bogus “War on Terror”, which government and Wall Street are using as a psychological platform to keep Americans ignorant but supportive of military deployment overseas.  Well,  I would say that the odds are that We The People are being “Fooled Again!“.

So the followers of Gov deceived the followers of God, and church after church across the land joined hands with the Gov and demanded that the psychedelic underground counter-culture anti-war peace movement be tormented, bullied with cops’ nightsticks, hand-cuffed, tossed into prison, fined, and defamed in the eyes of the public.

As an honorably discharged U.S. Marine and veteran of the Viet Nam war, I came to my senses enough to join forces with the psychedelic underground anti-war peace movement to oppose the insanity of the Viet Nam war.  I remember that when we would gather in the public parks or on campuses to chant for peace and sanity, the “Authorities” would send out their obedient thugs to subdue us. That was the reality back in the day. If you stood for sanity, if you were against invading faraway lands to destroy indigenous cultures for Wall Street’s benefit, you could be clubbed over the head, hand-cuffed, put in jail, or worse, and the damned church crowd cheered the police state onward, as if the cops and national guard soldiers who were beating us were somehow “Onward Christian Soldiers, marching as to war“.

But I do not harbor resentment toward that part of American society, the part which believed the government’s lies. Heck, I had believed the government’s lies myself, living as I was in a delusional state of mindlessness in which I actually quit college, joined the Marines, and volunteered for duty in Viet Nam.  (That was in 1965.) I believed the government lies because I believed in “America” and I foolishly had associated in my own mind some impossible equation which held that the Government was “America”. Long years would pass before I could understand that our damned-by-God government is not “America”, but is itself completely “anti-American” as it has grown outside its Constitutional box, outside the Founders’ “Original Intent”, into an authoritarian monstrosity now demanding full control over our private lives as well as our public policies.  Today’s government wants full control over our activities and our mental states as it makes “wars and rumors of war” all over the world by any whim of Wall Street and the Washington DC incorporated banking dynasty.  No, I do not hold animosity for the public’s blindness back then, nor even today. I forgive the whole mess in which the human condition is once again embroiled and conflicted.  As a psychedelic counter-culture advocate for peace, I understand that forgiveness is my escape from the past.  Yes, I speak out against these illegal, immoral, and very sinful “wars” overseas, and I truly speak out against our CIA and ilk meddling in the internal destiny of so many little nations around the planet, but I forgive it as I seek to maintain Love’s Thought System as my personal focus. Hell, I often muse to myself — I was born the same year they dropped the Atomic bomb, 1945, so obviously I did not start all this mess, this horror called “civilization” with all its conflicts, hatred, greed and violence. It was all present on earth before I got here. And I realize that I, being only one little naive guy, can do nothing to change this wicked old world or heal its ways.

But what I can do is change it inside my own self, by living up to Love’s Thought System and extending Love outward into this cold hard world of hatred. I can do good deeds, can be an honest individual harming none, trespassing against none, forgiving all and wishing for all an awakening unto righteousness. In seeing that as my reality, I have removed myself from the great unwashed masses and their Lemming-like plunge over the cliff into obliviousness, have become part of Life’s “solution” instead of being part of Life’s “problem”.  It is the passive way of spiritual development. It is one soul’s mission to purify itself from the ego’s base insensitivity. Thus do I, and thus is my personal path a part of the mission of The Mental Militia — the regimenting of the content of my mind and the deliberate choosing of Love’s Thought System over Fear’s Thought System. The tools of this inner work include “awareness”, observation, self-judgement, personal responsibility, discernment, and a devotion to the natural beauty in Life as it existed before mankind created and then contaminated governments.

No. Today’s imposter government is not “America”, and it does not represent me.  I claim the original documents, the Declaration of Independence; the Constitution; and the Bill of Rights. Those documents forbid our current foreign policy, forbid the police state, forbid the surveillance state, forbid wars which are not declared by Congress, forbid the federal government’s involvement in the education of our children within our several States, forbid the tenets of the entire National Security Act of 1947 which gave the government the alleged “right” to lie to the American people in the name of “national security, forbids “black operations” such as “False-Flag Events”, forbids the so-called “War on Drugs”, forbids the aerosol spraying of chemtrails in our air supply, forbids “Unconventional Warfare” and “MindWar” by our military-industrial complex, forbids usurpation of States’ Rights and State Sovereignty, forbids the management of public lands inside State boundaries by idiotic and futile agencies such as the EPA, BLM, USFS, etc. On and on the list of travesties could go, were I to take time to list them all.   I cannot stop all that, but I can speak out about it. And well I know that for doing that, for dissenting, for speaking out against it, just as we old hippies did when we were trying to stop the insane Viet Nam war, the damned government will place me on various government “lists” and keep an eye on me lest I commit a “thought crime” or challenge the government’s now-illicit “authority”. Well, so be it. I’m old now, and am not ruled by fear. And here in my old age, I’ve still got my copy of  “Who’s Next” to reassure me that my memories from half a century ago provide a good guiding light for my remaining time on earth. The song “Won’t Get Fooled Again” was a powerful adhesive for the peace movement back then, and it is still inspiring me today. Enjoy both versions below.

Won’t Get Fooled Again _ Solid good audio for hearing lyrics.

This version is for tonal quality. Below the lyrics is a poorer quality video of a live performance which shows the energy level of the 1960s psychedelic underground counter-culture antiwar peace movement.

Won’t Get Fooled Again

The Who

We’ll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that’s all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain’t changed
‘Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war

I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again, no, no

I’ll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I’ll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

Yeaah!

There’s nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Don’t get fooled again, no no

Yeaaah!
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
